Riyadh Named Arab World’s First Digital Capital

The council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information Technology (ICT) named Riyadh as the Arab world’s first digital capital for 2020. This was announced in a meeting in Ritz-Carlton hotel in the kingdom’s capital city Riyadh.

The council’s decision to name Riyadh was based on the Saudi Arabia’s role in promoting the use of digital technologies to enhance education, healthcare, community welfare and socioeconomic development which resulted in the increase of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 4% in Information and Technology sector.

The Kingdom’s ICT sector is the largest in the Arab world, and is ranked 13th globally. It is one of the highest social media usages in the world. The internet user penetration has increased to 93% where as the global average is 53%.

Saudi Arabia is the first country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to adopt 5G technology.
